Guitars bit-crushed and morphed into sculptural pseudojazz-objects, field recordings and body percussion spliced and looped into fidgeting hypnotic grooves, and hardware and software synths interacting in a skittish cybernetic field.
A soundtrack to walks through the edge-lands and overgrown between-spaces of the Mancunian sprawl.
It was those walks, down those grey-green corridors, that provided the inspiration and often the recorded material upon which these 6 tracks are based. Littered bottles and crunching footsteps form the skeletal percussive backbones of "Waterfront" and "Reddish Vibe" which bookend the EP. Elsewhere, field recordings scattered among these productions reflect the textures of modern peri-urban life - taken at a local disused cooling-pit-turned-fishing-pond from which track 3 takes its name, a recording of a wood pigeon's call introduces the meditative "Home iz the Zone", smothered in white noise from the eternal horizon of the M60 ring road. Recorded during the relative calm in the eye of the COVID storm, this track is in somewhat representative of the project as a whole - an inversion of Sun Ra's "Space is the Place", the track invites the listener to turn inwards, towards the endotic, the forgotten concrete islands, the micro-wildernesses of alleyways and reservoirs, the weird and the reclaimed.
This short selection of instrumentals consists of tracks made throughout 2019 and early 2020, predominately featuring laptop, korg minilogue, 6 string guitar and 5 string bass, and was recorded in various temporary "studio" setups - under the stairs, the top of a chest of drawers, a bedroom floor, and so on.
The EP and its companion piece, an upcoming full-length entitled BODY MAGIC, together introduce and summarise the past three years or so of the Unweather project. What will happen next remains to be seen...
